After his return to India in 1915, he set about organising peasants, farmers, and urban labourers to protest against excessive land-tax and discrimination. Assuming leadership of the\u00a0<a title=\"Indian National Congress\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_National_Congress\">Indian National Congress<\/a>\u00a0in 1921, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for various social causes and for achieving\u00a0<i><a title=\"Swaraj\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Swaraj\">Swaraj<\/a><\/i>\u00a0or self-rule.<\/p>\n<p>Gandhi famously led Indians in challenging the British-imposed salt tax with the 400\u00a0km (250\u00a0mi)\u00a0<a title=\"Salt March\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salt_March\">Dandi Salt March<\/a>\u00a0in 1930, and later in calling for the British to\u00a0<i><a title=\"Quit India Movement\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quit_India_Movement\">Quit India<\/a><\/i>\u00a0in 1942. He was imprisoned for many years, upon many occasions, in both South Africa and India.
