Employing\u00a0nonviolent<\/a>\u00a0civil disobedience<\/a>, Gandhi led India to\u00a0independence<\/a>\u00a0and inspired movements for\u00a0civil rights<\/a>\u00a0and freedom across the world. The\u00a0honorific<\/a>\u00a0Mah\u0101tm\u0101<\/a><\/b>\u00a0(Sanskrit<\/a>: “high-souled”, “venerable”)[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0\u2013 applied to him first in 1914 in South Africa[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0\u2013 is now used worldwide. In India, he is also called\u00a0Bapu<\/b>\u00a0(Gujarati<\/a>: endearment for\u00a0father<\/i>,[6]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0papa<\/i>[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup>) and\u00a0Gandhi ji<\/b>, and known as the\u00a0Father of the Nation<\/a>.<\/i>[8]<\/a><\/sup>[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Born and raised in a\u00a0Hindu<\/a>\u00a0merchant caste<\/a>\u00a0family in coastal\u00a0Gujarat<\/a>,\u00a0India<\/a>, and trained in law at the\u00a0Inner Temple<\/a>, London, Gandhi first employed nonviolent civil disobedience as an expatriate lawyer in South Africa, in the resident Indian community’s struggle for civil rights. After his return to India in 1915, he set about organising peasants, farmers, and urban labourers to protest against excessive land-tax and discrimination. Assuming leadership of the\u00a0Indian National Congress<\/a>\u00a0in 1921, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for various social causes and for achieving\u00a0Swaraj<\/a><\/i>\u00a0or self-rule.<\/p>\n

Gandhi famously led Indians in challenging the British-imposed salt tax with the 400\u00a0km (250\u00a0mi)\u00a0Dandi Salt March<\/a>\u00a0in 1930, and later in calling for the British to\u00a0Quit India<\/a><\/i>\u00a0in 1942. He was imprisoned for many years, upon many occasions, in both South Africa and India. He lived modestly in a\u00a0self-sufficient residential community<\/a>\u00a0and wore the traditional Indian\u00a0dhoti<\/a><\/i>\u00a0and shawl, woven with yarn hand-spun on a\u00a0charkha<\/a><\/i>. He ate simple vegetarian food, and also\u00a0undertook long fasts<\/a>\u00a0as a means of both self-purification and political protest.<\/p>\n

Gandhi’s vision of an independent India based on\u00a0religious pluralism<\/a>, however, was challenged in the early 1940s by a new Muslim nationalism which was demanding a separate Muslim homeland carved out of India.[10]<\/a><\/sup>Eventually, in August 1947, Britain granted independence, but the British Indian Empire[10]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0was\u00a0partitioned<\/a>\u00a0into two\u00a0dominions<\/a>, a Hindu-majority\u00a0India<\/a>\u00a0and Muslim-majority\u00a0Pakistan<\/a>.[11]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0As many displaced Hindus, Muslims, and\u00a0Sikhs<\/a>\u00a0made their way to their new lands, religious violence broke out, especially in the\u00a0Punjab<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Bengal<\/a>. Eschewing the\u00a0official celebration of independence<\/a>\u00a0in Delhi, Gandhi visited the affected areas, attempting to provide solace. In the months following, he undertook several\u00a0fasts unto death<\/a>\u00a0to stop religious violence. The last of these, undertaken on 12 January 1948 when he was 78,[12]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0also had the indirect goal of pressuring India to pay out some cash assets owed to Pakistan.[12]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Some Indians thought Gandhi was too accommodating.[12]<\/a><\/sup>[13]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Among them was\u00a0Nathuram Godse<\/a>, a\u00a0Hindu nationalist<\/a>, who\u00a0assassinated Gandhi<\/a>\u00a0on 30 January 1948 by firing three bullets into his chest.[13]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Captured along with many of his co-conspirators and collaborators, Godse and his co-conspirator\u00a0Narayan Apte<\/a>\u00a0were tried, convicted and executed while many of their other accomplices were given prison sentences.<\/p>\n

Gandhi’s birthday, 2 October, is commemorated in India as\u00a0Gandhi Jayanti<\/a>, a\u00a0national holiday<\/a>, and worldwide as the\u00a0International Day of Nonviolence<\/a>.<\/p>\n
